Service Description
Target Skill Level: Intermediate Course Length: 1.5 hours TiD CEUs: 1.5 IDCEC CEUs: 1.5 HSW AIA LUs: 1.5 HSW Presenter: Kathryn Parkhurst, AIA, NCARB, TiD-B This course introduces architects, interior designers, and allied design professionals to the intersection of Trauma-Informed Design (TiD) and neuroinclusive design. Participants will explore what neurodiversity is and why it matters to the built environment, examine the autonomic nervous system's role in shaping how people experience space (Polyvagal Theory, neuroception, and hypo-/hyperarousal), and learn the Trauma-Informed Design Society's 11-domain framework as a practical tool for translating research into design decisions. The course then moves from theory to evidence-based specification — covering the eight senses, lighting and acoustics targets, spatial planning and wayfinding, biophilic design, and color and materials — before grounding these concepts in three real-world case studies spanning education, healthcare, and workplace design. The session concludes with a phase-by-phase project checklist and strategies for advocating for neuro-inclusion with clients, within design teams, and across the profession.
Cancellation Policy
In order to be eligible for a refund, cancellations must be received prior beginning the start of the course. A credit, which may be used for other services or purchases from Trauma-informed Design (TiD) Society, may be provided for enrollments cancelled after the course begins, in the sole discretion of the TiD Society.
