Regulation Matters: Opposite Action

TiD Moment: Regulation Matters

Opposite Action

Today's Regulation Matters TiD Moment introduces the concept of Opposite Action.

Watch the video below to learn about this technique and how small changes can have a big impact.

When we're stressed, familiar behaviors feel safe and predictable, even when they aren't helpful. By making a single, small, intentional change, we can shift ourselves out of "autopilot" mode and gain a measure of control.

Try it yourself.

Are you feeling down? Overwhelmed? Disconnected? Restless? Stuck? Anxious?

Sarah Erdman Jordan, LPC, TiD-B, our mental health consultant, offers specific examples of changes you can try when experiencing these emotions that may help you interrupt your body's response to the stress you are feeling. She then goes on to explain why these simple shifts can result in significant changes in your mood and sense of control.

Remember, the techniques presented in Regulation Matters are not just for your own self-care.

You can use any of these when you are working with others and notice them becoming dysregulated. In this way, you can offer co-care and support to friends, family, coworkers, research participants, or anyone with whom you have developed a trusting relationship.
